About this deal

Back in the day, the American Laserdisc release of the film was misframed and erroneously cropped off character heads in some shots during the final act. Still, it’s undeniably fun to get new material with these characters, including Pete (Jack Nance), Josie (Joan Chen), Harry (Michael Ontkean), Andy (Harry Goaz) and more. Miguel Ferrer and Catherine Coulson, both dying of cancer while shooting their scenes, gave their final performances (as Albert Rosenfield and The Log Lady, respectively) for this show and passed away before it premiered.

More frustrating is the continued lack of the DVD commentaries many of the Twin Peaks crew recorded for the show’s original DVD releases years ago. An idiosyncratic FBI Agent investigates the murder of a young woman in the even more idiosyncratic town of Twin Peaks. On top of over six hours of previously unreleased bonus content, it will also include the special features from Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery released in 2014 as well as Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series from 2017.Lynch is meticulous about his sound design, and the mix here consistently makes interesting (often unsettling) use of ambient sounds, subtle effects, and quietness. and "Something About Johnny" -- followed by a 6-minute standard definition reel of previously released scenes. Familiar faces like Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer), Grace Zabriskie (Sarah Palmer), Richard Beymer (Ben Horne), Kimmy Robertson (receptionist Lucy), Harry Goaz (Deputy Andy), Dana Ashbrook (Bobby Briggs), James Marshall (James Hurley), and many more likewise step back into their old roles. David Lynch had been in a period of unmistakable artistic decline for a number of years, and his last feature film, 2006's Inland Empire, was a three-hour disaster. I’ve written plenty about Twin Peaks before, including several years ago when I reviewed the "Gold Box" DVD collection for the series, but suffice to say, I stand by all my previous statements on the show's brilliance.

What a fantastic show this was and such a shame it was axed before its time, much like Laura Palmer herself. Add to that some great extras, old and new -- most especially those treasured 90 minutes of deleted scenes from Fire Walk With Me -- and you have a wonderful, and likely definitive, collection of one of the most iconic and influential TV shows ever.

We also meet a variety of new characters, including Andy and Lucy’s son Wally (Michael Cera), Cooper’s doppelganger’s wife Janey-E (Naomi Watts), Cooper’s previous assistant Diane (Laura Dern), Agent Preston (Chrysta Bell), a pair of crooked casino owners (Jim Belushi and Robert Knepper), and a spineless insurance salesman (Tom Sizemore), among others. Sometimes, the participants' stories conflict, such as when one actor will say that Lynch allowed tremendous improvisation on set while the next will claim that everything was tightly scripted. A couple of very clever and funny network ads announce a broadcast marathon and a scheduling time change. The Partyland nightclub scene has blaring, deafening music that intentionally drowns out the dialogue. It managed to be all of these things at once, without contradiction, woven up into a tightly structured narrative that demanded strict attention from its audience.
