About this deal

On the other hand, the homage by the author to the predecessors who recorded their findings with patience, creativity, hard work, and faithfulness to their crafts are inspiring and worth emulating. A beautiful book for artists and mushroom lovers. The illustrations are all lovingly done with lots of detail and in my opinion, are a great source of inspiration to paint a new picture. Most of the illustrations are in color. Some of them are shown as drawings in the book. I got the inspiration to curate this wonderful collection of vintage mushroom charts and mushroom drawings from a recent trip to London. Self-taught artist Tiffany Bozic’s incredible illustrations are inspired by her “travels to wild places” and her exposure to various research specimens at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. Rendered with watered-down layers of acrylic paint on panels of maple wood, each anatomically correct plant, flower, animal, and insect is painted with precise detail—just like vintage botanical illustrations in old science books. However, Bozic often adds her own surreal twist, depicting her earthly subjects as if they’re from another reality.

I may not know much about mushrooms but I have always been fascinated with them. As a child we'd go foraging for them in local parks (in a big city). In Sowerby’s book, there are hundreds of illustrations of fungi and mushrooms. Here I show a small selection of the drawings that personally appealed to me.The book has several sections. Each is divided by the source of the images, and so by subject matter as well. Botanists, researchers and mycologists including Paulet, Perard, Lucand and Vittadini (his Amanita muscaria details are breathtaking) depict common and uncommon species with such passion, knowledge and attention. Bulliard's descriptions and detail are out of this world! Truly lovely. I am so grateful for those who found detailing mushrooms important for future study.

It's a fascinating book of history with beautiful illustrations. I would not recommend it as a field I’m going to be honest and say that I don’t know much about mushrooms outside of the very basic of how they grow and that the colorful ones are the most dangerous but I found this book so very interesting, I could sense the love and care that the authors of the illustrations put on this work, the fact that some of this pictures are dated centuries ago just make this book even more special. Fungi are members of the group of eukaryoticorganisms that includes microorganisms such asyeastsandmolds. Around 120,000 species of fungi have beenidentified, but estimates suggest there may be between 2.2 and 3.8million species. Another mushroom poster from Adolphe Millot. This one is from the book “ Illustrations for Le Larousse Pour Tous“.What a gorgeous book! Mycology is a fascinating subject and I’m excited to this this book as a reference for my art James Sowerby was an Englishnaturalist, illustrator, and mineralogist. He studied art at the Royal Acadamy in London in the late 18th Century. I have always loved botanical art but mostly flowers and foliage. Only recently did I start being fascinated with fungi. Two of the books I have enjoyed the most this year had fungi at its core (Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon and Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia). I officially became a fan of Kingdom Fungi when I saw Fantastic Fungi on Netflix. This is a true work of art & knowledge that looks like it belongs in an ancient library ( which is a totally amazing compliment coming from me) just as much as it belongs in EVERY library! So much fun to read & observe. I truly enjoyed this so very much.

I do agree that this would be a great book for any artist who wants to try their hand at botanical drawings. The details in this one are just stunning and you can also see the way they did shadows and showed various bits of the mushrooms. There is a key at the bottom of the mushroom chart naming each species. Also, each mushroom illustration is assigned one of the four letters: This book is filled with beautiful illustrations. A wonderfully curated collection that is perfect for nature lovers as well as art lovers. This is a wonderful vintage mushroom chart with over 69 individual mushroom illustrations by the fabulous French naturalist artist Adolphe Millot.
