About this deal

Costa: Founded in 1971 by the Costa brothers in London, it has become one of the country’s favourite coffee shop. Coffee pod machines have come a long way in recent years, with the best models bringing some serious advantages in terms of customisability and convenience, and even rivalling manual espresso machines in terms of flavour. However, with more options than ever, it’s become that much harder to figure out which machine will suit your needs best. To that end, we’ll be comparing two of the biggest names in the game, Nespresso and Tassimo, to help make choosing your new capsule machine a little easier. Press the temperature icon repeatedly and you can cycle through the options: white, yellow and red. In my tests extracting an espresso pod on the medium (half a cup) setting, the white temperatures were in the low 60s, the yellow ones in the mid-60s and the red ones in low 70s (°C). However, the temperature of your final drink will also depend on other factors such as room and cup temperature.

If you want to stray outside the brand’s own classic range, there’s also a healthy selection of third-party options available from well-known brands such as Dualit and Lavazza, as well as smaller independent roasters. Once again, if you’re plumping for anything in the Vertuo range, you should note that there aren’t many third-party Vertuo options currently available. One note is that this is the same scheme that runs with Nespresso machines, so if you think you'll get a more eco-friendly initiative elsewhere, it's pretty much the same no matter what Tassimo or Nespresso machine you opt for. For a machine that doesn't run on pods, take a look at our roundup of the best coffee machines. Cleaning the Bosch Tassimo My Way 2 Known as one of the biggest units in the family, this weighs around 3.5kg and measures 30 x 20 x 30 centimetres. Compared to the many newer models out there, this is ideal if you are from a hard-water area. This does not only have a Brita water filter, but it has almost 4x of them. This is ideal both for your taste buds and as well as machine internals.

Extracting the milk, the machine started off a bit noisy, then calmed down before letting out lots of steam and a hissing sound at the end, which reached 77db. The machine also managed to splash some droplets of milk. The other reason to choose the My Way 2 is the built-in Brita filter. Not only does this improve the taste of drinks, it means you don’t have to filter water beforehand. That said, it’s worth bearing in mind that the filter takes up room in the tank, meaning its 1.3L capacity is reduced to just 1L.

This is pretty straightforward. For a start, you need to empty the drip tray and give it a good scrub. You can also remove the mount for the T-Discs (or pods) and clean it in either a dishwasher or by hand. You need to wipe the dispenser from below the mount and at the base of the machine. Tassimo was first introduced in 2004 in France and is now available to the rest of the world including the UK. All Tassimo machines have been developed in partnership with Bosch, so you can rest assured that reliability and build are second to none. The hot beverage system single-serve coffee system that prepares one-cup servings of espresso, regular coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and various other coffee drinks, notably those including milk such as latte or cappuccino. The Brita water filter and its holder will need to be removed from the water tank. To rinse out the machine, the orange cleaning disc should be used – it’s stored in the handy little alcove on the left side of the machine. While we’ll speak generally about what the advantages and disadvantages of each range are, based on the models we’ve reviewed, our comparison will focus on a selection of the brand’s most popular models: the Creatista Uno and Vertuo Next from Nespresso, and the Vivy 2 and My Way 2 from Tassimo. There are a few size-related compromises, though. For example, the water tank is small at 700ml, awkwardly positioned at the side, and has to be removed to be filled. This means that you may find yourself topping it up frequently if two or more people are using it during the day. However, even though it’s small, it works just as hard as the larger Tassimo machines, meaning you’ll be able to make exactly the same drinks without giving up as much space.
