With hopes once again seemingly dashed as to the future of The Abbey pub, there appears to be no end in sight for the battle to open what was once Derby's cheapest boozer in one of the city's oldest buildings. While scaffolding currently adorns the historic building, no details have been provided by the owner - Samuel Smith's brewery - as to what these works involve, or over whether we are any closer to seeing it reopened. The Old Brewery at Tadcaster was founded in 1758 and bears the name of local brewer Samuel Smith. It is both the oldest brewery in Yorkshire and the only surviving independent brewery in Tadcaster. The brewery, under the direction of Humphrey Smith, is a major landowner within Tadcaster and a holder of many properties across England. Accusations of neglect to long-term empty properties were aired during a 2009 edition of BBC Inside Out Yorkshire & Lincolnshire. It also explored Smith's local power and disputes with Selby District Council, the local authority for Tadcaster, such as his pursuit of a number of planning application objections to judicial review stage at the council's cost. [16] 2010 [ edit ]

The smallest of the three modern-day Tadcaster breweries, Sam Smith's is one of the few remaining British breweries to employ the traditional Yorkshire Squaresystem in the production of its beers. In 2019, the brewery became further notorious for its prohibitions after introducing rules banning the use of mobile telephones, tablets, e-books and laptops within the indoor area of its pubs with the aim of removing activities that discouraged conversation. The ban also includes "pictures of sport". [12]In August 2020, after the Cow and Calf in Sheffield failed to serve his favourite dessert, Humphrey Smith dismissed the pub's managers and shuttered the place. After repeated attempts at engagement with Sam Smith, local residents and politicians petitioned Sam Smith to protect the local landmark from further deterioration. Again to try and encourage conversation among punters, there is no music to be played in Sam Smith's pubs. That means no jukeboxes or live music. No dogs That led to a pub in Droitwich Spa, in Worcestershire, getting closed down overnight in 2019, after just seven weeks of being open, when Mr Smith heard someone swear in the building. There are, in theory, cheaper beers available, such as Taddy Lager, but they often seem to be unavailable in practice. The show also found that between 2017 and when the show aired in September 2021, the brewery had had more employment tribunals brought against it than any other company of a similar size. This included counts of disability discrimination, disability harassment, breach of contract, unfair dismissal and wrongful dismissal.

The brewery is now led by director and chairman, Humphrey Smith, a direct descendant of Samuel Smith, who founded it in 1758. It is still based in Tadcaster, between Leeds and York, with its around 200 pubs not selling any beers which are made by corporations. Its wines and spirits come from a York-based producer, and it also has its own soft drinks brand. Unusually for many country pubs, dogs also don't make the cut as to what is allowed in the brewery's establishments.
