About this deal

The 1,000-watt burner offers six temperature settings. Even at the highest one, the infrared technology focuses the heat to the cooking surface, which helps keep the base and housing cooler. With this style of burner, the heating element cycles on and off during use.

We’re heading for the Dimplex 403TSFTie as our top electric convector heater, and here’s why. If you browse any online store offering convection heaters, you’ll see plenty of cheap, or no-name brands. And generally, you’ll find that the highest-rated products aren’t always the best; they’re simply the cheapest. Doing so will reduce the kWh you use, but you still have the option of getting that heat boost by cranking it to the full 3kW output. Fan heaters are probably the ones you want if you’re on a budget and you expect good results. Which is the cheapest electric heater to run?We use a force meter to record how much is needed to topple each heater over and a decibel meter to measure how much noise each one makes while running. If you have an existing hearth in your home, an inset electric stove is an attractive, mess-free and environmentally conscious replacement for a coal or log burning fire. Similarly, our selection of standalone electric stoves make for a beautiful centrepiece. With realistic LED flame and illuminated coal bed options, an electric fire means that you don't have to sacrifice the cosy atmosphere of a log burner.

These can still be bought, but they aren't as popular or widely available as fan or convector heaters. In our tests, we set every heater to run at full blast so you can see the maximum amount it cost to heat our medium-sized test room. If you have the thermostat of your heater set to a desired temperature, the heater will toggle on and off once it reaches that temperature – depending on what's needed to maintain it. The heater won't operate continuously, so won't cost you as much to run. Are electric heaters cheaper to use than central heating? Once you’ve settled on the best type of heater for your room and needs, there are a few extra things to consider.

Electric Heater Running Costs

Typically, these heaters are quite large. So, not only do they take up space, but they can be more cumbersome to move than a small fan or halogen heater. That said, a typical convection space heater only weighs around 4-5kg. Portability features: If the heater will remain in the same spot, you won’t need these, but if you’re likely to move it around your home, wheels and handles can prove useful. Under current energy prices, the electric heaters we've tested can cost anything from 9p to 87p per hour to run on full blast.

Timers and thermostats: These give you more control over how long your heater is on for and the warmth it’s emitting. Setting a timer and thermostat also means you can use your fan more efficiently, as it will turn off once it's been on for a set period of time or when the room reaches your desired temperature – much better than guessing or leaving it on for longer than necessary! The least expensive portable electric burners have a coil-shaped heating element, which is a perfectly good way to heat a pot but is difficult to clean if anything drips on it. A flat cooking surface—either in the form of a heavy cast-iron plate or smooth tempered glass—is easier to clean but adds cost. Beyond shape, there are also multiple burner technologies; both coil and cast-iron burners use a standard electric heating element, while more advanced (and more expensive) cooking methods include infrared and induction, both of which cook on a flat, glass surface. The 3kW DXFF30TSN space heater from Dimplex is more than big enough to heat a small room, a compact space such as a campervan, or even a converted-into-office garage or a small home gym. Weight An electric heater isn’t cheap to operate, therefore, investing in the most energy-efficient appliance possible will save you a great deal of cash in the long run.How the electric heaters are used can also impact their safety, explains Giuseppe Capanna, Product Safety Engineer at the charity Electrical Safety First. “Some simple steps people can take to use their heaters safely are to avoid powering from an extension lead, as this can overload and cause fires, and to ensure they are at least a metre away from combustible materials such as clothes,” he says. Programmable timer Useful for setting a heater to turn on just before you get home or wake up, so there's no waiting around for the heater to warm up. Some modern options also have smart features so you can program them via companion apps and smart speakers.

It’s easy to use: just set the required temperature with the digital controls, then leave it to work. However, it still crams in some useful features, including a timer and an eco mode, weighs less than 1.4kg and, with a carrying handle built into the top of the tower, is particularly portable. What’s more, De’Longhi throws in a compact remote control. Unobtrusive and effective, this is one of the best compact heaters around. Our guide will focus on the most efficient electric heater of each type on the market. We’ll explain the different kinds of electric heaters, what running costs you can expect, and will tell you what’s the best heater we found after reviewing more than 15 models. Types of Electric Heaters The difference in price between the cheap brands and Dimplex is much higher for a small heater fan than it is, for say, convection heaters. You’re looking about twice the price for a Dimplex fan heater compared to the cheapest ones available. For particularly draughty buildings, a halogen heater is the best heating appliance you can get. Its infrared heat focuses on heating objects rather than the surrounding air. And that’s perfect when you’re in a building with a constant flow of cold air — a small heater would struggle to keep the entire air mass at the desired temperature. That’s why we won’t be recommending any storage heaters below. The best electric heating units (depending on your space and heat requirement) that are the cheapest to run and buy are convection, fan, and halogen. For days when you just want to take off the chill, you’ll be able to set the heater to 400W or 800W. And, for the cooler days and nights, you’ll be able to max out the heater on its 1.2kW setting. Weight These have exposed heating elements, which heat up cold air as it passes. This often leads to slower, but more even, heating. They tend to be a little slower than fan heaters, but are quieter, and our tests found some are still pretty speedy. Some heaters come with a timer to switch them on just for the evening, say, while others have a temperature display or a remote control. A few heaters are even introducing Wi-Fi connectivity and smart controls, so you can activate and control your heater using an app – or even Alexa voice commands.
