About this deal

His heroics led him to rise in rank from private to corporal to lieutenant and to the command of a platoon at age nineteen and a company at age twenty. Dawn was now breaking off the coast of North Africa. In the far distance, men could make out the steeple of a Catholic church rising above the port of Fedala.4 There was the sound of machine-gun fire. Bright red tracers spat across the lightening sky. Ahead loomed a flat, broad beach a couple of miles to the east of Fedala.

He writes with clarity about martial arts competition, something that prior to reading the book I was concerned would be made overly complicated or drawn out. Discussing his faith in the early part of the book seems awkward, hesitant, and out of place. However, by the end, his beliefs are comfortably intertwined with his life experiences. Concerning receiving the Medal of Honor and returning to civilian life after WWII: "The medal already weighed heavy and set him [Daly] apart from others, creating an even greater separation from those who hadn't experienced combat. He had been deified it seemed. Ordained as different from all the other young men who had come home. Already, there was perhaps a fear that he might fail to live up to the expectations associated with being a public hero. Gone was the energizing mission, the all consuming commitment to others he'd discovered in combat."

It is 2019, high time that we consider talking about mental illness without any qualms. Since time immemorial, women in Indian society have been taught to consider themselves as an invisible entity with their health both physical and mental being of almost zero importance. This belief had led to women developing critical ailments which remain undetected for years due to negligence and when discovered are at a stage where little can be done about them. Psychological, emotional and financial conditions tend to play an important role in the wellbeing of an individual. Most of the times, socio-economic conditions also lead to mental health issues. Against All Odds – Psychosocial Distress And Healing Among Women (2018)

Told she wouldn’t walk, Ellie has danced on mainstages. Told she wouldn’t learn, she has gained a college education. And told not to dream, Ellie has gone on to become the first model with Down Syndrome to be photographed for Gucci and continues to change the face of fashion from the inside out in countless international campaigns. The story centers around four of the 36 Marne Men who were awarded the Medal of Honor - Capt. Maurice Britt, Capt. Michael Daly, Lt. Col. Keith Ware, and 1LT Audie Murphy. What started as a project of passion for Kris Gopalakrishnan a co-founder of Infosys, to record and preserve the progress of the industry through an aptly named non-profit called ‘Itihaasa’ (Sanskrit for ‘it happened thus’) resulting in hundreds of hours of recorded interviews with 50 of the industry’s movers and shakers, eventually has led to this book. From January 8 to 23, 1943, Britt and his fellow Marne men kept a tight cordon around the elegant Anfa Hotel as Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Roosevelt and their military staffs planned strategy for defeating the Axis in North Africa and then in mainland Europe. "Britt personally met his Commander in Chief," it was later reported, as well as "Churchill, De Gaulle, Marshall, and others."17 Although we know how the story ends, it doesn’t make the book any less suspenseful. There were many agencies and people involved in the rescue mission and right from the start, we are faced with all the life or death decisions they are faced with. For Craig and Harry, there is also the ethical decision that comes with binding and drugging children, and the personal sacrifices they make for what seems like a very slim chance of succeeding in their mission.

Pitch-perfect.”— The Wall Street Journal•“Riveting.”— World War II magazine•“Alex Kershaw is the master of putting the reader in the heat of the action.”—Martin Dugard In another section of the book he talks about going to night classes to learn English, and refers to others in the class as ‘real retards’. What an awful thing to say. Paul and his peers were all in the same boat, trying to better themselves by learning to read and write, yet he has the audacity to refer to them with such awful words.

These two men were chosen for their medical expertise and cave diving knowledge, but this dangerous rescue asked so much more of them. They had to remain calm under extreme pressure and intense scrutiny, adapt to constantly changing circumstances and importantly, build trust among the rescue team and with the young boys and their coach, whose lives were in their hands. Fascinating ! i was thinking at the beginning of this book what shall i do with it when ive finished ? do i give it to a friend? a charity or do i Burn it so nobody ever see's the information again !? But people need to know whats gone on in the world dont they to make sure it never happens again ! keep your eye's closed and nothing changes ... and the beginning part of this book is HORRIFIC ! however it then becomes such an eye opener i feel like ive had an education on wallks of life that i didnt know about ..... i dont normally write this much on a review. The boat incident was important though. It gave Harry, or Burt, as his father called him, an incentive to align himself with watery environments and told him that there were always high risks.

Success!

It was while serving in Korea that Norris took up martial arts, and this is my favourite part of the book. His drive and determination saw him putting in long hours after his regular shift. He learned through defeat (yes, he was defeated...a lot) and on being released from the military he went on to compete, ultimately winning the world middleweight karate title and holding it for six years. The descriptions of his fights are fascinating and his rise to fame through his karate schools and onward into movies is almost as engrossing. The "facts" and memes seem endless, attributing superhuman abilities to Norris, and not without some justification. The book handles a lot of dimensions in relations. Izzie's relation with Zach is a pointer to whether money should have a role in relations. Whether one should choose a partner on the basis of their career and ability to earn. Justin and Richard's relation is an eye opener about mono-sexual relations and feasibility of having a child through surrogacy. Julies love life is an example of the dilemma to accept the reality we all face when everything is right. William's relation is an indication of complications that could happen when there is a difference of a generation between the couples. For those, who have already been introduced to the magical world of her books, Against All Odds would seem a light and fun read but that will only increase the curiosity to read more of her as it happened with me.

The essence of the book that I truly appreciated was its straight-forwardness. Some readers may consider it grandiose and bragging but when he achieved a major accomplishment he is not hesitant to claim quiet victory. And when he failed to meet a goal or reveals a character flaw, he does so with humility. Both time honored traits of a true martial artist and Christian.Britt returned Stateside to a hero’s welcome. Fawned over by journalists and invited to speak at war bond rallies, he was the Sergeant York of his time until Murphy (who didn’t receive his Medal of Honor till war’s end) returned home and superseded him. Perhaps inevitably the author opens with Audie Murphy, the most familiar of the quartet. The son of a Texas sharecropper who deserted his family amid the Depression, Murphy dropped out of school in the fifth grade to support his family at odd jobs. At the outset of the war, though underage and undersized, he managed to enlist. Murphy participated in every campaign from North Africa to Sicily, mainland Italy, France and Germany, impressing everyone with his courage, aggression and marksmanship and earning every American award for valor, as well as French and Belgian decorations. The cave area became a complex ‘instant’ city for journalists, locals helping out, political and international personnel with expertise in cave rescue, supposedly. Governments became heavily involved, red tape waived. The spirituality of the region was very important. All of Thailand watched and prayed. Schools were closed. It gripped the world.
