A true story of imprisoned WWII allies shot down over Germany doing what they can to keep going in the PoW camp. To most of the inhabitants of Central Europe the army was the state, and their lives cannot be understood without examining it. But with a little help from Clair’s children (who now populate several of the most esteemed orchestras in the country), they pulled together a fully realized retelling that proved to be worthy of a slot on the big screen. Showalter surveys an army at the heart of a national identity, driven by – yet also defeated by – warfare in the modern age, which struggled to capitalize on its victories and ultimately forgot the lessons of its defeat. The late Christopher Duffy was the foremost historian of the armies of the Seven Years War, if you have not encountered Duffy’s work, then you are in for a treat, Instrument of War is considered definitive, and essential reading for anyone interested in this period and a benchmark for solid history writing.
