About this deal

I mean ruins because it didn’t have to be, this book could have stood up by itself and been counted. But for those interested in near future dystopias with a kitchen sink feel about them, The Witness by James Jauncey is an excellent read. Partly because I feel that this book is good and partly because I feel that being part of the ‘Noughts and Crosses’ series ruins it. In it, lies the true tragedy, as misunderstandings and failed communication cause as much damage as the social forces do.

Still makes you stop and think about things as the previous books have done without stopping it from being a great read. Of course I was wrong and the original ending still stands, but it was a reminder of how empty the series was for me. Each teenager harbours a dreadful secret, their reluctant friendship flowering and faltering through shared experience, unwilling criminal involvement and the use of violence to defeat evil.

A Nought boy at an exclusive Cross school, Tobey has dreams of going to university and getting out of the cycle of poverty and violence. I started reading this series a couple of years ago and only in the last month or so decided to pick the last 2 books up and actually finish a series for once. Purely because it doesn’t feel like it belongs, it doesn’t feel like it’s meant to be in that world. Blackman portrays an engagingly vulnerable, multifaceted character in Tobey, who narrates the majority of the book, and through him creates for her readers profound moral and ethical dilemmas.Double Cross is the fourth, and to my knowledge, the final book in Malorie Blackman’s hard-hitting Noughts and Crosses series. In fact, I finished reading this book about 5 hours ago but I still can't stop thinking about it and wishing for more, remembering moments still makes me catch my breath. Adrian Harrington began trading in 1971, as part of Harrington Brothers in the Chelsea Antiques Market on London's fashionable King's Road. But when he's offered the chance to earn some money just for making a few 'deliveries', just this once, would it hurt to say 'yes'?
