About this deal

I'm not sure there were any more accidents because of these books, probably not, but certainly nowadays children wouldn't be encouraged, they would probably be positively discouraged from the types of activities that Ladybird featured in this set of books. This will be a worrying thought for most of us Brits aged between 30 and 45 (and a good many younger) who will remember Peter and Jane as childhood aquaintances who where charged with the task of teaching us to read. The very famous reading scheme featured two children, Peter and Jane, and all the books are so beautifully illustrated. As illustrated by Berry, Wingfield and Martin Aitchison, the children appear to live in one of the postwar new towns.

I knew he could recognise hundreds of words when he was 6 years old so was a bit frustrated that he wasn’t making any progress in school. Busy providing a safe, stable environment for their own little Peters and Janes, men such as Berry and Wingfield showed a world where things were, on the whole, getting better.Over 80 million books in the series have been sold worldwide, and the books remain in print in 2012. The ‘childen’ will, of course, be even older since they were meant to be between 5 and 10 years old when they were created, in 1964. Since then the 3rd version has been tinkered with; the boards were issued with a laminated finish from about 1983 and recent years have seen other cosmetic changes to the covers – for example to incorporate the spotty strip on the spine that was a feature of Ladybird books from the end of the 1990s. Personally, I prefer Dandelion Readers, and Jelly and Bean series - they worked great with both of my DDs.

The confidence building thing is magic and I'm my humble opinion a massively important cornerstone of reading development. And phonics will help him read (and eventually spell) new and unfamiliar words - in a way that sight words never would. Additional words are introduced gradually, page by page, to expand the reader's reading vocabulary, with the new words on each page set out in a footnote. I am sure that schools use just Phonics in line with EY curriculum and to prepare children for the Phonics screen at the end of Y1. The illustrator is Robert Ayton, who was one of Ladybird’s chief contributors during the golden age. Born in 1915, Ayton trained at Harrow College of Art and initially worked in advertising, producing designs for Castrol and Rolls Royce.
