is lighter than 1920. Since Old Forester undergoes second barrelling, it is sweeter and lighter than the latter. It is like a dessert on a glass with little warmth. Your ability to find these bottles or their price doesn’t play into this ranking at all. Moreover, this is based largely on tasting 2021 versions of these bottles over the past six-ish months — so if you have a bottle that’s been cellared for 20 years, we can’t speak to that (although… fun!). Palate: On the front palate, a very brief berry note leads off the front and the flavor transitions to caramel and toasted nut notes. In the mid-palate, the caramel note drops off and seasoned oak and caramelized sugar lead into a light cream and seasoned oak finish. Final Thoughts and Score/Buy A Bottle: Score: 88/100

I need to really concentrate on this one (which I like) to tease out the individual aromatic nuances. There’s a touch of dried firewood that slowly expands to encompass ground cinnamon, tarragon, and thyme. There’s a momentary whiff of latex that makes me feel slightly quizzical, though this recedes soon enough, returning my focus to those ample, concentrated cherry notes. In total, this gives the sense of being very rich. The Old Forester 1920 and 1910 used a similar mash bill ratio: 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley. Conclusion: I stand corrected in regards to Old Forester. This is a great bourbon. It’s available and (somewhat) affordable. This became one of the highlights of the 2016 bourbon releases for me. I hope to see more releases with this flavor profile from OF in the near future.

In each of these categories, Old Forester has a contender among its broad range of bourbons. Though the annual release of the Birthday Bourbon expression inevitably results in disappointment for many hopeful sweepstakes entrants (this writer included), there’s plenty of Old Forester around, much of it achieving a level of price-adjusted quality that deserves a classification of “very good” or better. The nose is sweet but more caramel and fruity. It has a hint of the cherry nose I’m used to with Old Forester. But, this is much warmer and rounded. It’s spicy with notes of cinnamon and minty. The taste is where this one becomes impressive. It’s viscous and syrupy. It’s sweet and spicy. There’s a caramel apple or dark cherry note. The finish is more leathery and woody. It blends to oakiness towards the end. Nose: Top notes of orange blossom and cedar. Soon develops the classic rye bread warmth and a lingering waft of buttered pancakes.
