About this deal

We run another Android CPU benchmark, the multi-core version of Geekbench by Primate Labs. GFXBench 5.0, a third Android test, stress-tests the GPU with both low-level routines like texturing and high-level game-like image rendering that exercises graphics and compute shaders; results are reported in frames per second (fps). In fact, you can now choose from a full spectrum of budget-to-premium models. Enter, therefore, the new Acer Chromebook 714, a 14-inch model and something of a ‘tweener when it comes to pricing. The best Chromebooks you can buy in 2023 1. Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i Chromebook: The best affordable chromebook Anyway, the upside of what for the most part is a tough, all-metal laptop should be good long term durability. The downside is weight. It’s a fairly slim device at 1.8cm. But that tough build means it weighs in at 1.6kg. It’s still very portable, with a compact 45 watt charger, but this is not a featherweight laptop. It feels significantly larger and bulkier than a typical 13-inch Ultrabook or the likes of the MacBook Air. This isn’t the most stylish, the lightest or the most powerful Chromebook but it’s the one with the best overall balance of performance, features and value for money. It has an excellent 13.3in full HD screen, a lightweight, convertible form factor and superb connectivity, including 802.11ax Wi-Fi. The keyboard is fantastic, and it’s a great device for everyday use.

One upside of the low-power spec is that battery life is very good. In our video rundown test, the Chromebook 314 kept going for just over 13 hours: a superb result. In November 2019, Google announced that they would extend the Auto Update Expiration (AUE, formerly End of Life) by six months to two years for over 135 Chromebooks. For more information on AUE, visit our blog, Chromebook 101: What is AUE & EOL? Acer’s Chromebook Spin 713 is now getting a little long in the tooth, but it’s still one of the best Chromebooks on the market and, in some ways, superior to its successor, the Spin 714. The 2-in-1 design and 3:2 aspect ratio, 13.5in high-resolution screen is a winning combination for browsing, entertainment, and getting homework or office work done. In fact, the squarer 2,256 x 1,504 resolution display seems oddly larger than most 14-inch screens, and it’s brighter with more vibrant colours, too. And, if you're not a super demanding user, you should be pretty happy with the Acer Chromebook 14's battery life. In TechRadar's Chromebook battery test – in which we play an HD video continuously until the battery calls it quits – the Acer Chromebook 14 managed a runtime of about 9 hours and 2 minutes (screen set at 50%brightness).The touchpad is perfectly functional, but there’s no mistaking the plastic for glass and it’s noticeably less sensitive than the touchpads on Acer’s more expensive Chromebooks. You can, of course, use the touchscreen instead, but I find it weird prodding the touchscreen of a non-convertible Chromebook, and while Chrome OS is becoming more touch-friendly, it’s still not something that feels like a must-have.

That said, the Chromebook did have one total meltdown where all of my apps simultaneously crashed and shut down. Thankfully the laptop recovered immediately and I didn’t see a repeat performance. Of course, restarting everything was a major pain in the posterior. Acer Chromebook 14 – Battery life While the keys on the keyboard don’t have much travel, it’s a very comfortable Chromebook to use, with a decent Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) screen and richer colours than you would usually find at this price point. Strapped for cash and in need of a thin, light laptop? Stop right here. These benchmark results place the Acer Chromebook 14 right there with other lower-end, Celeron-based Chromebooks. The Kraken benchmark score of 3958 milliseconds is roughly on par with that of the similarly-specced HP Chromebook 14.One thing the 314 is missing, however, is connectivity. There’s a USB-C port on the left-hand side, but the only USB-A port is USB 2.0. Given that you’ll need the Type-C port for charging, that doesn’t leave much to go around. As for wireless connectivity, you’re looking at a familiar combo of dual-band, 2×2 MIMO Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0. Acer Chromebook 314 (NX.AWGEK.003) review: Keyboard and touchpad If you’re only interested in browsing and using Google’s Workspace apps, you’ll probably get by, but for anything else you’re going to wish you had splashed out a little more on something faster. Even then, we’d recommend the cheaper non-touchscreen option. It has less storage but it’s arguably better value. The Acer Chromebook 14 stands out for its stylish design and big screen at an affordable price. If you're looking for a classier Chromebook, this is it. The Acer Chromebook 314 is not a monster of a laptop and it knows this, working extremely within its limitations. As such, it manages to balance performance, battery life, features, usability, and design for a well-rounded computing experience. Acer's Chromebooks are some of the most readily available in the world, and as a result, at the time of writing - and to be expected - the Chromebook 314 is available globally.

You'll see a lot of Acer products on this list, but only the Acer Chromebook 516 GE can claim to be among the first of a new type of ChromeOS laptop. The GE stands for "Gaming Edition," and it's one of the first gaming Chromebooks to hit the market. Made with cloud gaming in mind, the Acer provides premium hardware and a sturdy design with gamer-friendly touches, and it doesn't cost thousands of dollars. On top of that, the online games available for play with the Chromebook are actually quality, including popular AAA and indie games (via subscription game streaming services like GeForce Now), without all the chunky hardware or short battery life typical of gaming machines. Who It's For Interacting with that great design and actually using the Acer Chromebook 314, is, generally, a joy. It really is a lovely machine to work with and engage with. Chromebooks run quite different software to Windows and macOS laptops so we can’t run our usual suite of benchmark software on them. However, the principles remain the same. With Chromebooks, you also don't need to worry about long-term lasting power. Google has just increased the supported life of all Chromebooks from eight years to 10 years, meaning that you have a full decade of use knowing that you'll continue getting automatic updates. One of the main benefits of Chromebooks is the generally dependable battery life. Google’s undemanding OS and the low-powered components are a boon for longevity, although not all of these laptops live up to expectations. This Chromebook is ideal for anyone who prioritizes sustainability or customization. It is perfect for those who want to upgrade and repair their laptop rather than buying a new one every few years. The price may be a little steep for a Chromebook, but it is worth the investment for those who value reparability and longevity in their tech products.

This is now our favorite Chromebook for pretty much everybody; we recommended it to anyone who wants a reliable and powerful 2-in-1 ChromeOS laptop. Its standout features—like long battery life and best-in-class performance—make it an ideal choice if you prioritize performance and productivity. Overall, this model should be a first stop if you seek a versatile, high-performing, and durable 2-in-1 Chromebook beyond the budget bin. Acer is one of very few manufacturers to fully embrace the wonderful world of Chromebooks. These stripped-down, simplified laptops use Google’s Chrome OS instead of Windows, with more of an emphasis on online work and play. And in the case of Acer’s collection, they come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to suit your own personal needs. Sitting somewhere in the middle of this range is the Acer Chromebook 14. The usual native display resolution on a Chromebook will be 1,920 by 1,080 pixels, otherwise known as full HD or 1080p, but cheaper Chromebooks may have lower resolution while deluxe models may have higher. For most midsize Chromebooks with screens from 13 to 15 inches, 1080p is just fine. Entry-level models' resolution of 1,366 by 768 pixels can look coarse and is only really suited for laptops with screens smaller than 12 inches diagonally. Try to avoid this resolution on any 13-inch or larger screen, or at least try to eyeball the display in person before you buy. Note that all Chromebook Plus models will have at least a 1080p screen. Processor According to our colorimeter, the Acer Chromebook 14's display can produce only 62 percent of the sRGB spectrum. That's lower than the HP Chromebook 14 (65 percent), Dell Chromebook 13 (96 percent), Toshiba Chromebook 2 CB35 (110 percent) and the average thin-and-light notebook (82 percent). And that's not to the detriment of the 314's design: it's pleasing as a result and immediately feels familiar. One of the upgrades over the basic entry-level Chromebook 14 is that Full HD display, which is certainly a joy to use. Whatever you’re up to, be it editing documents or streaming a cheeky bit of telly when you’re supposed to be working, those visuals stay perfectly crisp. As expected, however, the sound quality takes a dive on those top levels. For enjoying music you’ll want to plug in some ‘phones or a dedicated speaker.
