About this deal

Operating the camera using the dial control was a fresh and enjoyable experience, I can quickly access the auto mode for a quick snap or a preset of settings with just 1 turn away. The Sunny F16 rule tells us to set your shutter speed for 1 over ISO (rounded up) so in this case it would be 1/500sec. Leaving behind the boxy exterior that was common in the late 70s and early 80s, the Supreme had subtle curves for increased ergonomics. The camera sets your shutter speed and exposure via the light meter on the front, so making sure the flash doesn’t fire is really the only thing to keep an eye on when shooting. The ergonomic handgrip and shutter release position make the camera really easy to hold and shoot one-handed and, better still, the film doesn’t advance until you release the button. The top panel has an LCD display with frame indicator, battery level, flash mode and other information. I finished the roll one lunch break a few days later and put it in for development, keeping my fingers crossed that the metering was still working properly and that all the motor sounds were of film actually moving through the camera.I recently wrote an article about how I felt that I’d lost sight of the joy of shooting cheap film in cheap cameras and then using cheap processing.

One is a self-timer while the other winds back the film before you’ve finished it, should you want to do that. And though I may never find myself firing its flash in front of a full grown leopard shark, you can bet your snorkel I’ll have this Canon Sure Shot A1 with me the next time I’m in the pool. The active autofocus system used a near-infrared emitting diode and a PIN photodiode to determine the subject position by triangulation in a manner similar to a coincident-image rangefinder. For the trickiest of shots, where the subject is on the extreme edge of the frame, it’s possible to use the classic focus and recompose technique. It has a very distinctive styling of white with red seals including the O-rings around the lens and viewfinder. My goal was rediscover the fun and satisfaction found in not worrying too much about the final “quality” of the images. In the past when I’ve taken comparison shots between compacts and SLRs with decent lens I’ve been a bit gutted to find how much better the results from the bigger package were. During the next few weeks I loaded the camera with a couple of rolls of Portra 400 and another HP5+, but in these cases I replaced the DX code to ISO 250 for both film types.

Considering my parents house is hotter than the Sahara on a hot day I didn’t hold out much hope for this shiny little plastic brick to work. I liked 50mm because on the one hand it seemed so versatile (step back a bit for an environmental shot, move a bit closer for a portrait) and on the other hand I found the process of framing compositions at that shooting distance to be especially satisfying. This is the last model on the list to feature a fixed-length lens, but the smallest max aperture of the bunch at f/4.I made up a short 10 exposure roll of my usual HP5 and popped the camera in my pocket whilst out shooting my Pentax 67. While this camera can be submerged gently in the ocean or pool, it is not meant to withstand even a small amount of water pressure. You’ll always be able to find batteries for it (probably in a drawer along with some old keys that you don’t even know what door they’re for), getting it loaded is child’s play, and shooting it is fun and satisfying. I’ve read several of your reviews on this site, and to me the images often seem soft and lacking in detail on my end. A big reason for this is the fully-retractable lens that gives the camera a flat profile when powered off.

Interesting side-note, though I can’t verify this; when the IRA blew up The Grand Hotel in Brighton during the Conservative party conference, only one press photographer had their camera with them. One gripe I do have is that while the frame lines being so central is handy, they do seem to get lost in bright light. To adjust the focus, half-press the shutter button until the green light in the viewfinder lights up, indicating that the camera has locked focus. The manual states “once you set the shooting magnification, the camera memorises it and lets you take pictures with the same subject size from a different shooting distance or angle”.The Canon Sure Shot Supreme is a high quality, compact point and shoot camera that was popular when introduced and is still popular today. It’s solid with its tough plastic exterior (shiny scratchy plastic) and a rubberised hand grip on the right that has perfect ergonomics. This brought to my attention a few cameras that he recommended as having unusually good image quality: The Samsung ECX1, the Vivitar TEC 155 (aka Panasonic C900ZM) and the Canon Sure Shot Zoom XL (aka Autoboy Zoom Super, aka Prima Zoom F).
