As a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Dire Straits promoted the release of their first single and album with the Dire Straits Tour, which started on 6 June 1978 at the Lafayette Club in Wolverhampton, included 55 shows, ending on 18 November 1978 at the College of Education in Hitchin. DISC TWO, brings the story up to July 1981, when Dire Straits played at the Festival Park in Werchter, Belgium, while still touring and promoting their third record, the extraordinary Making Movies, released the previous October.The album was remastered and reissued with the rest of the Dire Straits catalogue in 1996 to most of the world excluding the U. It came off the back of their hugely success 1985 long player Brotehrs in Arms and featured plenty of tracks from that record as well as the four others before that. Luckily, I had help from the archive team at Universal and British Grove engineer Luie Stylianou, who was happy to do most of the assembly and syncing.

Whether you're a long-time fan or new to their music, explore Dire Straits' discography and experience the timeless appeal of this iconic British rock band. A huge single for the band and one that possibly contains one of the finest guitar solos of the last forty years. The reality is, of course, FAR from this, and the nature of how the industry worked then and, to some extent, does so today means that it’s a while before the hard graft pays off, if at all, as any major band that has achieved longevity will testify. The drums and bass guitar are clear and detailed but there is a lack of drive and punch in the sound.It is quite laid back by comparison but the mix of the mid tempo groove and the passionate playing of Mark Knopfler makes it an album highlight for sure.
