Cardenal Mendoza, the renowned brandy de Jerez, is aged for at least 15 years in the traditional Sherry system of soleras and criaderas. The brandy rests in casks that previously held Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez Sherries, imparting a deep, rich, smooth taste. In the early days it was used by alchemists for perfumes or medicines, but later it was discovered that it could be used to protect wines during shipment. At some point, it was observed that the spirit aged well in barrels and small quantities of what we might call brandy were produced, but Brandy de Jerez as we know it today dates to the late XIX century when sales took off. We launched our new, limited-production smoky brandy, Cardenal Mendoza Nebulis, during Golden Week. Two online tastings were held, one in Spanish with importers from Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico Mexico and national distributors; and another in English with importers from the USA, Germany, Israel, Russia, Italy, Switzerland and the UK. The cardenal Mendoza Brandy is a brandy of surpassing beauty and subtlety, and while I have no doubt it is good value for money, I can not help but say that it costs a lot to be so good, this brandy is just shy of the 50% mark (though it is not the most expensive in my current line up). The name of the brand is less than subtle, and I wonder if the distillers are hoping that once you have tasted the brand, you will be “satisfied” with it and not want to spend such money again.

Su calidad impulsa pronto una fama creciente y la bodega decide comercializarlo con el nombre de Cardenal Mendoza. El primer Cardenal Mendoza a quien nuestro brandy hace referencia, fue D. Pedro González de Mendoza (1423-1495), personaje histórico central en la España del siglo XV. Como consejero de los Reyes Católicos, contaba con la total confianza de la Reina Isabel, interviniendo decisivamente en el apoyo al primer viaje de Cristóbal Colon y jugando un papel decisivo en la unificación de España. Arnaldo está decidido a demostrarnos que hay mucho más detrás del mojito y la piña colada. Silva experimenta con licores que están ganando terreno y en su estudio ha resaltado la versatilidad del Cardenal Mendoza con las siguientes mezclas: Cardenal Smash Vino de un brillante color ámbar. De aroma punzante a avellana con matices de hierbas y tabaco y ligeras notas tostadas, de madera de roble. En boca es muy seco, suave, con acidez equilibrada y un postgusto prolongado en el que vuelven las notas de avellanas y frutos secos. Son vinos muy especiales que tienen una crianza biológica bajo velo de flor seguido de una crianza oxidativa. Luminoso, transparente, de caoba oscuro. De aroma redondo, limpio, elegante, vinoso. Equilibrado, persistente en boca y sin aristas. Personalidad, armonía de matices y el recuerdo profundo a pasas y ciruelas.

Cardenal Mendoza Clásico is a Solera Gran Reserva Brandy created from a selection of the best holandas (the finest spirit, distilled slowly in alquitaras or pot stills) which are aged in the traditional system known as soleras and criaderas. Vino de un brillante color amarillo dorado, transparente. De aroma delicado y punzante, con notas a levaduras y a masa fresca de pan y recuerdos almendrados que proceden de su larga crianza bajo flor siguiendo el sistema tradicional de criaderas y soleras. En boca es muy seco, con amargos suaves, con sabor a almendra y frutos secos, persistente.

The most recent addition to the Sánchez Romate family, Cardenal Mendoza Angêlus was created bythe Bodega’s foreman who wanted to transmit the fragrance of the orange blossom that engulfed the Bodega’s patio every spring. This was the essence which, mixed with the aromas of the sherry wines and brandies maturing in the Bodega, was what the foreman felt epitomized the Bodega’s home, Jerez de la Frontera. He got to work to try and capture this link to the city through the combination of aromas and tastes in a new spirit. Brandy de Jerez, or “sherry brandy,” is a type of brandy that is made in Jerez, Spain and aged in the solera style in ex-sherry casks. It enjoys Protected Designation of Origin status in the E.U. and is certified by Spain’s Brandy de Jerez Regulatory Council, whose logo appears on every authentic bottling. Around 20 bodegas currently produce Brandy de Jerez according to the council’s guidelines.
